What is anchor text?
Anchor text is the actual link text that a site visitor (aka a real human) sees on a web page. It’s clickable text that’s usually another colour or underlined, or some other indicator that the text is a link. You can see plenty of examples of anchor text links in this blog post that you’re reading, or throughout the rest of my website!
4 types of anchor text
1. Exact match anchor text
Exact match anchor text is when the clickable link text is an exact match for the keyword you’re targeting on the page that the link points to.
For example, if I link to another one of my blog posts and write out the full blog post title and set up the link as the whole title (as you can see, I’ve done this several times in this blog post). This is an example of internal links set up with exact match anchor text.
Another example: if another website writes “best wedding photographer in Seattle” and then links to your website, which is all about wedding photography in Seattle. In this case, it would be an inbound/backlink because another website is linking to you but it’s still an exact match anchor text because of the keyword relevance.
2. Brand anchor text
Brand anchor text is when the clickable link is the same as your brand/business name.
For example, if another website had an article about “Best Wedding Photographers in Seattle” and linked to your site via the anchor link “James Smith Photography”.
3. Generic anchor text
Generic anchor text is anytime the clickable text link says something super basic like ‘click here’, ‘learn more’ or ‘read the post’.
In this case, the anchor text has nothing to do with the page the link is on OR the page the link points to…. and there definitely isn’t any keyword relevance in the anchor text link!
This type of generic anchor text happens often but it’s a major missed opportunity, both from a user experience point of view but especially when it comes to SEO.
4. Naked anchor text
Naked anchor texts are when the clickable text link is straight up just a URL.
For example: https://www.charlotteohara.ca/ss-seo-checklist instead of something like “Download your free copy of the Squarespace SEO Checklist”.
From a user experience point of view, no one likes to see a fugly URL slapped on a page - it looks untidy and rushed. But also from an SEO point of view, naked anchor texts are missing out on linking keyword-rich text to the link itself.
How to use and set up anchor text on your Squarespace website
Any time you want to add a text link to your Squarespace website, you should consider the anchor text that is going to become the clickable link.
It’s a good idea to focus on NATURAL anchor texts as much as possible - both for the humans who are reading the page/post and for search engines like google who are crawling & indexing your site. So do your best to link in natural ways and build up real-language sentences as best as possible.
Then whenever you’re ready to make the anchor text a link, just highlight the anchor text, and go through the regular link setup process.
Final Thoughts
Anchor text is super simple to set up on your Squarespace website - it’s as simple as making text a clickable link!
But beyond that, there are different ways you can set up anchor texts and it’s always best to do it naturally with as many relevant keywords included as possible.
This way, your website has is stronger from a user experience point of view, but you also take advantage of the SEO benefits!
Setting up anchor text correctly is a little decision that packs a strong SEO punch, so if whenever you get the chance to set up a clickable text link on your Squarespace website, make sure you’re doing it in a way that gives you the most anchor text value possible!
